Paris is many things to many people. Some brief it’s streets as fleeting figures, framing it’s shiney parts via their camera lens or social media tiles. Other’s endure an impoverished short-stay to satisfy there travel bucket-lists. But for Parisians – those born and still living in it’s depths- Paris breathes a definable influence into their personality. A stoicism and calm, perhaps innately absorbed via it’s thousand year old pavements and the ever gazing Haussmanns. Parisian artists and craftsmen beneficially bleed this unique biology into their practice, mixing it with their own interpretations and experience. The outcome is generally one that begs the question—Why the fuck would you live anywhere else?

Jewellery designer, Ophelie Recher’s work is no different – an anthem to the past, to it’s relics & the shadows and leathered hands that shaped them. Every season her work further solidifies her beguiling talent and unquestionable skill as a young craftsman. Unlike many, she seems to be able to homage the past without being enslaved by it. Her hand crafted designs tread the fine balance between tradition and innovation, between wearability and difference. Unapologetically her intention.
We sit with Parisian Jeweller Ophelie Roch, reflect on her work with Roc Paris and discuss her insatiable need for adventure in all things. Welcome to GAZZETTE Ophelie.

Ophelie, your distinctive style conjures mystery lost within the sands of time. Was this always your intention? Always. Since I was teenager I have been passionate about the treasures that I hunt in flea markets. It fascinates me to imagine their past life, by which hand they passed through, or even what it meant to the person who owned it. That’s the feeling I want to convey in my creations.

You founded ROC back in 2020—what does the brand represent? Roc’s will is to offer a piece of history to their owners The jewelry brings to everyone the possibility to reappropriate my creation to their own story. It is a continuous circle of transmission of life fragments.

How would you encapsulate your design aesthetic in one word? I would say Antico-modern (ok it’s two)

What’s your birthstone? GARNET!! Yeah, it’s almost my birthday!

Have you ever crossed the threshold of wearing too much jewelry? Perhaps you can’t bend your fingers or cause delays at the airport security screening. “Less is more” is definitely not me. I never loved to adhere to the rules and be like everyone else. I stack a lot of my jewelry, that’s my way to wear them.

‘Less is more’

is definitely not me.

Are you sentimental? What can’t you live without? Oh la la, oui, very! That’s the reason why I attach a lot of value to objects.

What’s the best kind of souvenir? The ones we don’t forget.

I was broke, and I looked to reproduce
the jewelry I dreamt of. I started from scratch.

You are very passionate about jewelry—tell me how it all started? As long as I can remember, Jewelry has always been a part of me… I was broke, and I looked to reproduce the jewelry I dreamt of. I started from scratch.

Did you pierce your own ears growing up? Haha no, but I did other stupid things, like.. tattooing myself very young!

What was the most challenging subject during school? French (grammar)! The whole world says that French language is difficult, even as a French person myself I can confirm!

Please share the view from your atelier.

How does your favourite memory play out? On the road! Buying impulsively a flight ticket, driving a customized motorcycle to the unknown, hair in the wind, true freedom! A trip filled with its ups but especially its downs… it always ends up being my best memories!

What musicians do you keep coming back to? Younger, if my parents were looking for me, they would 100% find me in a Rock concert ! From alternative rock to metalcore, it’s the musique I always come back to and the one that gives me the most emotions.

Dogs or cats? Cat. I grew up with a cat, so naturally cat. I was recently inspired by the ancient Egyptian feline symbol which can be found in one of my latest creations that I handcrafted in gold and silver.

What brings you the most joy? The adventure!

When and where do your best ideas come? When I’m going out for a walk. I’m so grateful to live in such an inspiring city, filled with thousand years of history. You can be in the 18th century take another street and discover Roman ruins… traveling, getting lost are the moments where come my best ideas.

Can you share any future plans for ROC? I would like people to discover my relics beyond the borders of France and continue sharing my passion through the brand. Developing my treasure hunts around the world (the next one is coming soon) and expand my collection of coins beyond the Greek and Roman culture to other cultures.

It’s been an absolute pleasure Ophelie, do stay in touch.
